A TGV driver's cab
Ide TGV pertama kali diusulkan pada 1960-an.

The TGV idea was first proposed in the 1960s. The first prototype, known as the TGV 001, used gas turbines and produced its own electricity from oil, but after the 1973 energy crisis and high oil prices, this idea was considered impractical. The first electric prototype was completed in 1974, with the final version delivered in 1980 and the first service was opened publicly between Paris and Lyon on September 27, 1981.
Since then, other routes to Tours / Le Mans, Calais, Brussels and Marseille have been opened. The path to Strasbourg is under construction. And also other routes outside France that are being built are going to London, Cologne and Amsterdam. Further development to Spain and Italy is still in planning.
TGV is not the first fast train, because the Japanese Shinkansen which connects Tokyo and Osaka has been opened since October 1, 1964, almost 17 years earlier than the TGV.
